1. Wallpaper History Society Design Competition 2011 To celebrate the 25 th Anniversary of the Wallpaper History Society
2. The Wallpaper History Society was established to promote an awareness and understanding of historic and contemporary wall coverings. Its scope is broad and encompasses not only the history of wallpapers but also topics relating to other types of wall coverings and the subject of interior decoration as a whole. The aims of the Society are to encourage research and provide information on all aspects of wallpaper design, production and consumption; to foster and awareness of the importance of preserving period decorations; and to provide a much needed point of contact for all the different groups and individuals interested in these issues. Now running for the third year, the WHS would like to invite current BA Surface/Print Design students to take part in a competition to produce a selection of designs suitable for contemporary wallpaper based on the following:

9. Research Strong evidence of personal research is required. Museum visits, Exhibitions/Galleries, places of interest, Stately homes, houses and gardens, Archives, Libraries and Learning Resources. You must include evidence/examples of appropriate Market Research for the product and the theme.
10. Product Designs for a collection of contemporary wallpaper based on the above theme. Each design can include a variety of subject areas or specifically one. It is not essential that the designs work only as a collection.
11. Learning outcomes Show an understanding of how design work-shop processes can be used to develop design ideas for a contemporary market Make informed choices in design development and imagery in combination with processes Exploit processes to develop design ideas, mood-boards, more resolved pieces and illustrations of concept/in situs
12. Judging Panel This will include Zoffany, The Wallpaper History Society and others
13. Submission Requirements: Three Storey-boards minimum size A3 max A2 one each for past, present and future
14. Submission Requirements: 1 x sketchbook which must show clear evidence of traditional drawing and manual design skills.
15. Submission Requirements: 1 x research file (a collection of loose leaf torn magazine pages will not be acceptable).
16. Submission Requirements: A collection of a Minimum of 6 designs that responds to our theme ‘Past, Present and Future wall coverings’ i.e. a student can look at historical contexts/archives but design all 6 papers to one of the interpretations from past, present and future.

Exhibition Criteria The chosen candidates will be expected to produce a 2 metre length of their final design in full repeat 1 x Sketchbook only per finalist can be displayed along side the final piece. Postcards and business cards may be left. All students who are chosen to exhibit must be available for the private view and one of the two days over the first weekend to be available to steward the exhibition (10/11 th September)

Founded in 1986, the Wallpaper History Society was established to promote an awareness and understanding of historic and contemporary wallcoverings.
The study of wallcoverings was traditionally seen as rather esoteric, of interest only to specialist researchers and enthusiasts. But in the mid-1980s, articles on period decoration began to feature regularly in journals and magazines and it became clear that a much larger audience had developed an interest in the subject. Even so, information about, for example, the manufacture, design and location of historic and contemporary patterns could still be hard to obtain.
The Wallpaper History Society was founded to help answer questions of this kind by developing both a network of sources and ways in which information could be made accessible.
Its scope was broad and encompassed not only the history of wallpapers but also topics relating to other types of wallcoverings and the subject of interior decoration as a whole.
The Society's aims were to encourage research and provide information on all aspects of wallpaper design, production and consumption; to foster an awareness of the importance of preserving period decorations; and to provide a much needed point of contact for all the different groups and individuals interested in these issues.
Publications and Events
The Society organises a programme of events, including lectures and seminars, visits to wallpaper collections, historic houses and towns, and design studios and manufacturers' archives.
Conferences are organised to highlight particular themes and topical information is provided via a Newsletter and the Society's website.
Members also receive a triennial, colour-illustrated publication, The Wallpaper History Review, which is international in scope and contains information about new research, articles on the history, design, conservation and reproduction of period and contemporary wallcoverings, reviews of books and exhibitions and details of forthcoming events.
